Surah Al-Muddathir ( Surah 74 )

Surah 74: Al-Muddathir (The Cloaked One)
Revealed in: Makkah
Verses: 56
Main Themes: The call to Prophethood, the warning to disbelievers, the consequences of arrogance, and the vivid descriptions of Hell.

Background and Overview

This is one of the earliest revelations. It begins with the Prophet Muhammad being addressed directly after receiving the first few verses of revelation. The surah shifts between calling the Prophet to his mission and warning the Quraysh elites of the consequences of rejecting the truth.

Verses 1–7: The Call to the Prophet

O you who are wrapped up (in garments)!

  • Arise and warn.
  • Magnify your Lord.
  • Purify your garments.
  • Avoid all forms of impurity/idolatry.
  • Do not expect favor in return for doing good.
  • Be patient for the sake of your Lord.

Meaning: The Prophet is being prepared for a life of responsibility, humility, purity, and perseverance. This is the foundation of his mission.

Verses 8–10: The Warning of the Trumpet and the Day of Judgment

  • When the trumpet is blown, that will be a hard Day, not easy for disbelievers.

This serves as a dramatic reminder that a day of reckoning is certain and severe.

Verses 11–30: The Story of a Wealthy Arrogant Disbeliever

These verses describe an unnamed arrogant figure (often understood to refer to al-Walid ibn al-Mughira):

  • He was given wealth and sons.
  • Yet he rejected the truth.
  • He schemed against the Qur’an, calling it sorcery and mere human speech.

“Soon I will cast him into Saqar (a name for Hellfire).”

Insight: His rejection wasn’t out of ignorance, but deliberate arrogance. This passage shows how wealth and status can blind a person.

Verses 31–37: The Guardians of Hell and a Test of Faith

  • Nineteen angels are appointed over Hell.
  • This number is mentioned to test the believers and confound the disbelievers.

Key Point: The Quraysh mocked the number 19, but the verse reveals a divine purpose: to expose hypocrisy, strengthen the faithful, and cause reflection.

“It is nothing but a reminder to mankind.”

Verses 38–48: The Conversation in Hell

“Every soul is held accountable for what it has earned.”

But the righteous will be in Gardens. The disbelievers will ask them:

“What brought you to Saqar?”

They will reply:

  • We did not pray.
  • We did not feed the poor.
  • We indulged in vain talk.
  • We denied the Day of Judgment.

Reflection: These four actions are essential signs of faith. Neglecting them leads to ruin.

Verses 49–56: The Final Warning

  • The disbelievers are likened to wild donkeys fleeing from a lion.
  • They turn away from reminders, thinking themselves self-sufficient.
  • But no one can benefit unless God wills. He alone is to be feared.

Key Messages and Relevance Today

  1. Call to Responsibility: The Prophet is reminded of his duty to convey, warn, and stay pure.
  2. Warning to the Elite: Wealth, power, and arrogance are recurring causes of spiritual blindness.
  3. Hell is Real and Structured: The vivid images are not metaphors—they are designed to wake up hearts.
  4. Accountability is Personal: Each soul is held to account. The reasons for punishment are moral and social: neglecting prayer, charity, truth.
  5. Divine Reminder: The Qur’an is a wake-up call. Its lessons are for those who reflect.
