Surah Al-Bayyinah (Surah 98)
Surah 98 – Al-Bayyinah (The Clear Proof)

Theme:
This surah addresses both the People of the Book (Jews and Christians) and the idolaters (polytheists), explaining why they failed to believe until a clear, undeniable proof came. That proof is the Messenger (Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) and the Qur’an, a book of truth. The surah distinguishes between the people of faith and truth and those of disbelief, and outlines their respective outcomes.
Verses and Tafsir (Explanation):
1: Those who disbelieved from the People of the Book and the polytheists were not going to stop (their ways) until the clear proof came to them.
Tafsir:
Despite having scriptures or traditions, many persisted in disbelief or false worship. Allah sent a clear sign—not just any sign, but a Messenger with a divine book. Until then, they remained divided and uncommitted.
2–3: A Messenger from Allah reciting purified scriptures, in which are upright and just commandments.
Tafsir:
The Prophet ﷺ brought pure revelation, free from distortion or corruption. The Qur’an is clear, just, and morally upright—a consistent message of truth meant to unite and guide.
4: Nor did the People of the Book differ until after the clear proof came to them.
Tafsir:
Ironically, some of those who were supposed to recognize the truth first—like the Jews and Christians—rejected it out of pride or division, even though their own scriptures foretold his coming.
5: They were only commanded to worship Allah alone, with sincerity, and establish prayer and give charity. That is the upright religion.
Tafsir:
The essence of religion is simple and pure: worship God sincerely, pray, and give to others. These core teachings are universal across all prophets and were now reaffirmed in Islam.
6: Indeed, those who disbelieve from the People of the Book and the polytheists will be in the fire of Hell, dwelling in it forever. They are the worst of creatures.
Tafsir:
Rejection of the clear truth—after knowing and recognizing it—brings severe consequences. It is not about labels but about knowingly denying what is right.
7–8: But those who believe and do righteous deeds—they are the best of creation. Their reward is Paradise, beneath which rivers flow, where they will live forever. Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him. That is for those who fear their Lord.
Tafsir:
In contrast, those who believe sincerely and act righteously are honored as the best of creation. Their eternal reward is Jannah (Paradise), marked by mutual love between them and their Creator. It’s not about lineage or background, but about God-consciousness and sincerity.
