Surah Al-Lail (Surah 92)
Surah Al-Lail (Chapter 92) – Tafsir, Theme & Present Relevance
Translation (Sahih International)
- By the night as it covers
- And [by] the day as it appears
- And [by] He who created the male and female
- Indeed, your efforts are diverse
- As for he who gives and fears Allah
- And believes in the best reward
- We will ease him toward ease
- But as for he who withholds and considers himself self-sufficient
- And denies the best reward
- We will ease him toward difficulty
- And his wealth will not avail him when he falls
- Indeed, upon Us is guidance
- And indeed, to Us belongs the Hereafter and the first life
- So I have warned you of a blazing fire
- None will enter it except the most wretched
- Who denies and turns away
- But the righteous one will avoid it
- [He] who gives from his wealth to purify himself
- And not giving for anyone’s favor to be returned
- But only seeking the Face of his Lord, Most High
- And he will be satisfied
Tafsir (Explanation by Section)
Verses 1–4: The Diversity of Creation and Human Effort
- Allah swears by night and day, male and female — symbols of balance and contrast.
- “Indeed, your efforts are diverse”: Every human chooses their path in life — either toward good or toward harm.
Lesson: Life is full of choices. Each person is responsible for the path they pursue.
Verses 5–7: The Path of Goodness
- The one who gives generously, fears Allah, and believes in divine reward will be led to a life of ease.
- Not necessarily ease without challenges—but a sense of spiritual clarity, strength, and purpose.
Verses 8–10: The Path of Hardness
- Those who are stingy, self-sufficient, and deny reward will find life increasingly difficult.
- Wealth won’t save them when they fall—morally or in the Hereafter.
Verses 11–13: Allah is the Source of Guidance
- Allah alone gives true guidance and owns this world and the Hereafter.
- You cannot secure your success without Him.
Verses 14–16: Warning Against Hellfire
- A warning of punishment for those who turn away, deny truth, and choose selfishness.
Verses 17–21: Description of the Righteous
- The righteous give for the sake of Allah alone—not to show off or get worldly favors.
- Their only goal is to please Allah, and He promises that they will be satisfied.
Core Theme of Surah Al-Lail
- Life is about choices, and every person is accountable.
- Generosity, sincerity, and trust in Allah lead to ease, both in this life and the next.
- Selfishness and denial of truth lead to hardship and regret.
