Surah Al-Kaafirun (Chapter 109) – Tafsir, Importance & Relevance
Translation (Sahih International)
- Say, “O disbelievers,
- I do not worship what you worship.
- Nor are you worshippers of what I worship.
- Nor will I be a worshipper of what you worship.
- Nor will you be worshippers of what I worship.
- For you is your religion, and for me is my religion.”
Tafsir (Explanation)
This Surah was revealed in Makkah when the disbelievers offered the Prophet a compromise: that both sides worship each other’s gods for a year. In response, this Surah decisively rejects spiritual compromise and reaffirms the purity of Islamic monotheism.
Verses 1–5:
- The Prophet is instructed to declare that he does not and will never worship what the disbelievers worship.
- The repeated phrases reflect a clear boundary between truth and falsehood, not just in practice but in essence and belief.
Verse 6 – “To you your religion, and to me mine”:
- A firm, yet peaceful, declaration of religious distinction without aggression.
- It affirms that while others are free to follow their path, Islam’s identity must remain unaltered and uncompromised.
