Surah Anam (Surah 6)

Surah Anam consists of 165 verses and it was revealed in Mecca.

Surah Al-An’am, the sixth chapter of the Qur’an, is a Meccan surah comprising 165 verses. It primarily addresses the themes of monotheism (Tawhid), prophethood, and the afterlife, emphasizing the rejection of idolatry and the affirmation of Allah’s oneness.

Key Verses and Their Tafsir:

1. Verse 1:
*”All praise is due to Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth and made darkness and light. Yet those who disbelieve equate others with their Lord.”*

Tafsir: This verse begins by praising Allah as the sole Creator of the universe, highlighting His creation of contrasting elements like darkness and light. Despite these clear signs, disbelievers associate partners with Him, which is a central critique throughout the surah.

2. Verses 95-96:
“Indeed, Allah is the cleaver of grain and date seeds. He brings the living out of the dead and brings the dead out of the living. That is Allah; so how are you deluded? [He is] the cleaver of daybreak and has made the night for rest and the sun and moon for calculation. That is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing.”

Tafsir: These verses illustrate Allah’s power in bringing forth life from inanimate objects, such as plants from seeds, symbolizing resurrection and the cycle of life and death. They also emphasize His control over natural phenomena, reinforcing the argument against idolatry by showcasing His unmatched authority.

3. Verse 101:
“He is the Originator of the heavens and the earth. How could He have a son when He does not have a companion and He created all things? And He is, of all things, Knowing.”

Tafsir: This verse refutes the notion of Allah having offspring by stating that He is the unparalleled Creator of all, without need for a partner. It underscores His self-sufficiency and omniscience, negating any anthropomorphic attributes.

4. Verse 159:
“Indeed, those who have divided their religion and become sects—you, [O Muhammad], are not [associated] with them in anything. Their affair is only [left] to Allah; then He will inform them about what they used to do.”

Tafsir:This verse warns against division within the faith community, emphasizing unity in Islam. It instructs the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to disassociate from those who cause sectarianism, highlighting that judgment belongs solely to Allah.

Themes and Lessons:

Monotheism: The surah consistently calls for the worship of Allah alone, rejecting all forms of idolatry and associating partners with Him.

Prophethood: It acknowledges the line of prophets sent to guide humanity, emphasizing the continuity and consistency of their message.

Resurrection and Accountability: The surah reminds believers of the afterlife, where individuals will be held accountable for their deeds.

Unity of the Ummah: It cautions against divisions within the Muslim community, promoting cohesion and collective adherence to the faith.
